The exact foundation date of St Peter’s is unclear, but it is believed to have been around 1222 when Robert de Tuardo, the first known rector, was instituted. The Parish of Great Berkhamsted, originally part of the vast Diocese of Lincoln, has been central to the town’s ecclesiastical life for centuries. The church has seen several historical transitions, including being part of the Diocese of Rochester before joining the newly formed Diocese of St Albans in 1877
